Weird text message

I have just received a strange text message.

No subject, just blank and it had a name in the "from" part. The weird thing is the sender (Monty) is not in the phone book. Normally it would just show the number.

Does anyone know how this was done?

If your phone is in range and you have BT Enabled then people can send you a message via BT

Nope sorry, heard something similar on the Chris Moyles show the other week where he could send a message to any phone and it would appear as if it had been sent from the person in the phonebook, you'ld have to know the name was ther in the first place of course, wonder if it could be on the same lines

I know my company does this, if I send a message (via email) to a phonenumber@<url.addy> the message comes through as "companyname" when it hits the mobile phone and the rest looks like a standard text message. I guess they set "companyname" to "Monty"

I got a text message from macdonalds once, that had their company name up which surprised me never thought about it since as its not happened again.

There are some devices that can send a global sms message to any device, (within a certain range)

You sometimes get them at shopping outlets like the trafford center for example,

I reckon things are going to get worse and you will have shops that will advertise special offers as you walk past.

I remember seeing it on a program,
Basically they sent a text out to shed loads of mobiles asking them to come to a certain point in the shopping place for a prize..

My phone hasn't got bluetooth, it's way too old for that ;)

Probably that, but someone mucking about. No message as such, just the sender.

We were working on a similar thing a few years back when I was at Accenture... we called it u-commerce (or ubiquitous commerce). The plan was not to mass spam people, but as you correctly say, to target shoppers to pass on special offers as you walk past a shop, etc...

Here's an ACN article that sums it up. Not sure if it will really take off, but a few years ago, Accenture spent an absolute shed load of money on this.

Where can I get me one of them? :disturbd:

Re: Weird text message

I used to send my friendstext messages from a program i had on my computer, can't remember what it was called now, and i had to write my name in, and could write anythnig i wanted so it showed as 'from'.
I played a few jokes on them by putting something like 'Orange' in the 'from' box, and telling them that their account had been blocked...:D
