Exceedingly slow shutdown! Advice welcomed.

I am having problems shutting down the computer. We run Windoze XP Home. I did have a problem with Icon Packager but removing the program solved the problem (or seems to have).
Everything loads up ok but when it comes to shutting down it is taking ages (20minutes or more). What I am having to do is re-set then turn off from the log in screen, even this is slow!

Everything else seems to be working properly. I do run startup monitor to ensure not too much is running in the background and neither of us tend to have multiple applications running at any time. Any help is most appreciated!

TIA

PS did try a search to see of this had been dealt wioth before but nothing specific to this problem showed up.

What applications have you running in the background? Have you tried turning them off/ exiting them prior to closing windows down? Are you seeing any meesages in the event viewer about applications not shutting down properly?
Sometimes it can be caused by XP having to wait for applications to release memory etc before it can close down properly.

it takes time to troubleshoot problems like this sometimes but it is worth the effort.

You could try this.

got start run type regedit hit run
click file then export ,create a file easy to find, this will back up registry

browse the tree to HKEY current user/control panel/desktop

on the right find hung app timeout double click on it change the figure (drop a couple of 0's
then further down is wait to kill knock a couple of 0's off that to

when windows closes now windows will appear in theory the app sstopping your shut down will show

if nothing is found from here you can just double click on the file you saved and it will import back settings from before
