Unable to disable connection

Up until this morning I was able to right click on the local area connection in the control panel/network connection and disable it.
Then I started getting this pop-up box:
" It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This connection may be using one or more protocols that do not support Plug-and-Play, or it may have been initiated by another user or the system account. "
Does anybody know what this is and how can I get rid of it?
What have I done wrong?

Have you got a firewall running which may be interfering with it?

You're not using a router by any chance?

Why do you want to disable it?

As I said here: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=31312

Don't disconnect the coax.

Also, why bother disabling the connection? There's no need.

(& no need to unplug the modem either).

The ethernet cable....that way your computer is no longer connected to the net.....accomplishes the same thing as disabling the adaptor.....

The ethernet cable will stop your PC connecting- but I was being sarcastic! Doesn't solve the underlying problem...

I've tried googling but nothing. Can any of you guys figure it out?

Re: Unable to disable connection

It sounds (and reads from what I've found on the internet) like something else is hogging the connection.

Prime candidates are usually P2P programs, Firewalls, AV programs, other users, your router (exceptionally).

Do you get the same symptoms if you try to do it from safe mode?

If you don't then it is likely to be one of the programs that runs when you first start your PC.

Also, it's probably worth asking yourself what has changed over night:

Did you install any new software yesterday?
Have any of your programs performed an auto update (either last night or this morning)?
