Change of IP range, and terrible packet loss.
Last night i was connecting up to a direct connect server, as i do fairly often, and tried a search. The server booted me off, claiming my IP was set incorrectly (you can't search from a different IP than the hub thinks you're connected from).
Either way, it reported i had an ip in the '82.25.44.*' range, where as it used to be '213.106.127.*'. Strange. So i telnet into my router, and give it a reboot. Sure enough it picks up the new IP, and everything works fine, with regards to actually having a connection. While it would be nice to know why the IP range was changed, this comes second to discovering why performance has completely degraded since the switch. Ping times are fine to all for corners of the earth, but packetloss is sometimes hitting 50%, without load on the line - not good! I'm in the Manchester area (specifically Pendleton, Salford). spc1-ward3-3-1-cust***.bagu.broadband.ntl.com Anyone else having problems? __________________ Following.. 2 simultaneous pings to two servers, one in the .US, one in .NL. :welcome: to Cable Forum :D
With the cable network the IP addy you get is not static. It can change for all sorts of reasons, your own modem/stb refreshes it's connection, something on the network is rebooted or reconfigured. It can stay the same for months, or change frequently. Dynamic IP addresses is why banning access to users on forums and the like is often a waste of time. As for the packet loos / poor performance maybe there has been some sort of network reconfiguration (which explains the new IP) but you are the looser. |

Thanks for your reply. :)
I know cable uses (semi-)dynamic IP, however since we joined NTL, a good few years ago, my IP's has only changed about 3 times, and has always stayed in the 213.106.127.* range. I just thought it a bit strange for them to jump to a completely different range, not that it matters. As you said, it is most likely to do with some kind of network reconfiguration, possibly since our area has only recently been upgraded to the bandwidth options. (3Mbit in my case) I would have expected them to put a notification of work on their status page though.. Any thoughts? |
