PDA's/Palms
 

Hey Guys

I'm pretty new to pda's/palms, but i am looking at gettin one, mainly for the fact that i would like a diary/calender/tasks that i can carry around wit me, then sync with my laptop, when i return home.

Am i also right in believeing that you can get Satellite navigation on PDA's too? If so what does this involve (i.e do i just need to buy some software?)?

Can anyone suggest a reptuable brand and/or model, that may be suitable?

i have a palm tungsten e, it's the basic model without gps (which you need for sat nav). if you just want it to replace a diary/address book/play mp3s and video, then its spot on.

i thoroughly recommend palm products :)

I use a HP 2210 (IPAQ) and can recommend them, personally I'd opt for a plug in device for GPS (SD/CF/Bluetooth/Cable Connection) or a device that you can switch off when not being used. You will pay a premium for a GPS enabled device so ask yourself would you use it or is it a gadget that would be cool for a couple of days/weeks.

Make sure you can get a SD or CF card in to expand on the internal memory (and take backups!)

Wireless devices are pretty good if you have a wireless router at home/work - I have a 63xx !! HP that I have borrowed cos I am going racing and will have a wireless system for lap times etc.

Take a look into your local O2 shop, they have very nice stuff xda complete eith sat nav ( TomTom ) thing is you'll be tied to a phone contract, otherwise all you needis PDA / Sat Nav software / GPS antenna, think thats it

Cheers for the info so far. I have been looking at Palm and HP products earlier today. Not keen on O2 because of the phone contract, plus i have had bad dealings with them in the past!

So listening to what you've said am i best gettin a PDA and then purchasing a GPS antenna & Sat Nav Software, at a later date?? Is it really that simple to add Sat Nav compatibility to a PDA?

I use an hx4700 very nice powerful HP model. It has both an SD/MMC & CF Socket so for expansion you dont get much better.

It has both bluetooth & Wi-Fi (only B though). I use this with a Bluetooth GPS reciever & the tomtom software. TomTom has a very nice addon pack that allows your PDA to tell you the last known location for almost any speed cameras.

I'd go for a device running Palm OS over PocketPC any day. It is a far simpler and more elegant operating system. Don't be fooled, when comparing different PDAs, when you see comparable HP or other PocketPC models carrying twice the RAM of a PDA running Palm OS. You're not getting more RAM, you're seeing the consequences of PocketPC needing twice as much memory to work effectively as Palm OS.

I have a Palm m515 (about four years old and no longer in production). It is very reliable and does exactly what I want it to: organises my life and lets me muck about with silly games when I have time to kill on a train. :D
