Moving to Athlon Dual Core

When CPU prices have dropped sufficiently, I intend to move to dual core.

My current CPU was £250. It runs at 2.4ghz standard. The equivalent dual core chip is £400 and only runs at 2.2ghz.

How long before anyone thinks I'll be able to get a faster dual core version of my chip for the same money?

Cheers.

That's great, just the answer I was hoping for.

Expect to pay through the nose for new tech. Seeing as you have a Venice core 3800+ why upgrade? I think in a year or two, dual core CPU's will have flooded the market and many of todays popular applications will be developed to take advantage of multiple threads, including new game engines, so that's prolly the best time to go dual core.

Dual core is going to be my christmas present to the second most important person in my life who happens to have most cash spent on them.

Oh yes I am refering to me btw :D

Dual core will hyperthread now so multi tasking will see huge improvements

I don't want to upgrade now, just wondering how long I will be able to wait until the urge becomes too great.

It will become too great when I can expect dual core and a speed increase for about £250 or less.

I know im just making the point that there is no wait for software to develope for these chips its here now,Intel multithreaded with a virtual second core Amd have a real one

IMO, if you have bought a decent cpu not too far in the past, there is no point in upgrading until the Socket M2 chips come out.

depends what you use the pc for. I do a LOT of CPU intensive stuff (more or less 24/7) and if i had the cash i'd be upgrading just now.

My gf is thinking about letting me have a AMD FX55 for my Birthday ( got told to whistle at a fx57) for my pc, are they worth the cash they will be then?

Sorry for HIjack but not worth making a thread over? my Birthday is in October. Should the fx57 not be in fx55 prices by then?

I wouldn't get your hopes up, the FX55 actually increased in price the whole time it's been out.

Darn a fx55 would be a massive boost on my 3000 64 athlon but won't be getting me changing it. Will be off to the shop.

No thanks, I went down the 939 path and intend to actually make use of it.

Otherwise there is no point choosing stuff that can be upgraded.
