You're tagged!

a 15 year old from scotland has been electronically tagged for 'minor offenses'

Quote:

Glasgow City Council said the tag was "part of an intensive support and monitoring service."

But the Scottish Human Rights Centre called the move "concerning and gimmicky".

It said the tagging of someone who is under 16 - who is still a child under Scots law - will not prove effective.

Director Rosemarie McIlwhan said: "Tagging by itself will not actually address the problem.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4609849.stm

so what does everyone think...tagging or having this person go to a young offenders institution, apparently support should be given as the 'child' does not know what is a correct way to behave :erm:

tag him, that will show the PC brigade and hopefully teach the kid a lesson and serve as a deterrent.

so a 15 year old is not criminally responsible in Scotland? to much Bucky can cause this regression then?

Well I can't see much info about what he has done to get tagged. If he has been antisocial surely an ASBO would have been used?

That will show the "PC brigade" *what* exactly?

Surely the only thing this will do is show them that the "String Them Up Brigade" still has little connection with the real world...

This PC Brigader wants to know why some out there are happy to see a child tagged without knowing what the minor offences are?

Like mirror, signal, manoeuvre, howabout engage brain, think, type?

Its not exactly going to harm him being tagged is it.
He should be named and shamed for his crimes so should wear the tag.
Though I do agree, as well as this, he should be given counciling or and rehbitation guidance too.

You STILL don't know know what he's supposed to have done yet persist in believing tagging is appropriate (how can you possibly know?) and, seemingly, that the end of the world is nigh.

Granted, there are troublesome youths out there, but there have always been. I I do not disagree that there are pensioners afraid to leave their homes. However, in real terms, is this fear really justified? Or is it actually due to the fact that the tabloids have blown the situation out of all proportion in an attempt to sell newspapers with sensationalised stories?

Of course, you can`t adopt the "do-gooder" line as this would undermine the constant flow of rhetoric, and so the cycle continues. And frankly, why would you want to when you have such an easy option as tagging available? No need to address the root causes if you can do something that gives the appearance of tackling any problems that may genuinely exist.

What he's supposed to have done is not that important if we're to discuss whether we think the use of tagging on under 16s is an issue for the human rights lobby to 'protest' over.

We could debate that without knowledge of his wrongdoing.

If we then establish that it IS appropriate at his age, then maybe we could explore whether the punishment fitted the crime.

For mere mortals, it is... relatively speaking.

Fair enough, but others have been happy to suggest slapping a tag on regardless which is what got my goat.

Are you suggesting I'm more than a mere mortal? How kind ;)

How can you establish that it is appropriate if you don't know what he did?

How exactly is tagging someone a deterrent? If he is a bad-assed wee scrote then he'll just laugh in the taggers face.

You can't. As I said, there is nothing to stop us discussing if tagging should even be considered for an under-16, irrespective of their crime(s).

Personally, I'd say it depends on how much self-respect someone has, as to how effective it is. If you're the kind of person that shrugs off a social stigma, then I guess it's not necessarily very effective - although the tagging equipment can at least assist in a level of confinement of the individual.
