lost IP address
 

Hi All

got a wierd one for you all...

I have a pc on a standard network, setup with static ip (192.168.1.xxx) which runs ok. As of Saturday it started running slower, but still usable. Anyway then i get this message relating to running out of system resources at which point i lose my network connection.

The wierdness starts here: - I only know i lose the network connection 'cos i can't ping from or to the machine. When i run ipconfig /all it shows no ip address, not 0.0.0.0 but it is just blank.

If i right click the LAN in the bottom right corner by the clock it shows as 'connected' but when i clickl on the support tab it again shows that there is no entry in the ip/subnet/gway.

A repair fails as does ipconfig /renew, but in any case the IP is static.

Bizarrely when i look at network ploperties the ip etc is all still there?!

The only way to sort it is to reboot the pc. It then works for a few hours.... until..... doh!

PC is a Dell 2.6 celeron 256mb RAM running XP pro sp2 and all current patches. I have disabled WOL and powermanagement for the Nic, any ideas?! - never seen this before...

Have you tried disabling then re enabling the Net adapter?

Yeah that makes no difference, only a reboot seems to fix it.

and i've run full up to date AV, spyware etc, all clean...:angel:

Any firewall running on the PC that's dropping the connection?
What's the physical layout of your network? Is it connected via switches/ router etc or does it use ICS?

The only firewall is the xp one, it is disabled and off in services...

I have 3 pcs, all through a 10/100 switch, and a Draytek vigor router also in the switch for Internet access, Netkonect service (BT)

Have you made sure that the networking hardware is ok? NICs checked (if fitted), switch ports swapped to see if anything changes? If only one PC out of 3 is dropping then I can't see it being the router but a dodgy switch port could cause problems.
Why is the IP static? Is there a reason why you aren't assigning IP's automatically?

i've swapped ports on the switch, no difference, the NIC is onboard, suppose i could swap it out but it tests ok... i use static for ease of remote access and file sharing etc.

Just can't figure out why it drops the ip, but still shows as connected. i've even blown all the tcpip stack away and redone it, still the same though.

I have tried using DHCP for the one dodgy machine too, still the same error...
