BEFSX41 Problem

I have the problem with the BEFSX41 and the Motorola Surfboard SB4100 modem. The WAN lights wont light up on the router. I know this problem can be fixed by inserting a hub/switch between the modem and router but is there any other way of fixing this problem.

The funny thing was that yesterday the router worked fine with version 1.50.18 firmware but today I reset it now the WAN lights will not light up.

Can anyone explain this problem?
