DHCP issues with Sweex router

I have just bought a Sweex 4-port 10/100 Broadband Router and am having issues installing.

Previously there was a PC successfully connecting to the Internet through Telewest. When I run everything through the router instead, the IP addresses are not being configured automatically. I get a time out with ipconfig /renew (with ipconfig, I get no gateway and auto IP address with a 169 prefix).

What am I missing?
- am I meant to register the router with TW somehow?

:welcome:

are you rebooting the cable modem between switching for pc to router?

You could also try cloning the mac address of the pc onto the router... there should be an option in the routers config to do this.

If your PC's giving a 169 IP its not a issue todo with the internet the computer isn't comunicating with the router. The PC should be giving you a 192 IP, if the router is giving the WAN Ip as 169 then try rebooting the modem.

You don't need to register anything with telewest.

Thanks a lot for the prompt replies!

Being new to cable modems, do I reboot simply by pulling out the power supply and putting it back in?

But, as Malc says, if your PC is getting a 169. address, it is failing to get an IP from the router, rather than the router failing to get an address from the cable modem. Make sure the PC is plugged into a LAN port and the CM into the WAN port on the router. Also, I don't know whether the TW connection is straight or cross-over. the PC - router cable needs to be straight-through.

Thanks for all the help. The advice was spot on. Just switched over while everything was off and booted up from scratch.

I am smiling past my ears with having internet in my room. Tis the sweetest thing!
