Windows 98 reinstal help
I have renewed the harddrive from 2gb to 20gb and the ram from 64 to 256. I have loaded Windows 98 from floppy and then cd and everything worked fine. I have then installed the printer and Norton Internet Security2005 and given the computer back to the owner (my dad who is too tight to buy a new one) and everything tested as working but when he decides to buy a flat screen monitor a week later and I fix it up, it wont start in anything other than safe mode.
I have reinstalled windows over the top but as it starts windows freezes on the Windows screen. The devises show that drive a and c are are using ms-dos compatability settings. Can anyone suggest a solution. This is the first time I have done this so no techy talk please! |
Re: Windows 98 reinstal help
Does it work fine with old monitor?
If not I would assume that something else has happend. Spyware, virus etc Is this any help? http://forums.wugnet.com/-Ms-dos-com...ict180768.html |
Re: Windows 98 reinstal help
This didn't happen the be a 'TAG' tft from somewhere like PC World did it? Did he install the drivers for it that came on CD? If so there's the problem. You need to roll back the registry, to do this press the F8 key before the 'Windows 98 is loading' screen appears and then select boot to command prompt. If it allows you to do that then at the C:\WINDOWS> prompt, type scanreg /restore (don't forget to put a space before the slash) and press Enter. Select a backup from the list and press Enter again.. Hopefully that will restore the registry to a working state and you can boot. You do not need the drivers for the TFT (if it's the one I'm thinking of) just keep it on standard Plug and Play Monitor.

When you say select a backup from the list can you give me some idea what will influence the one I choose. Oh the other thing I noticed is that in safe mode when viewing the system it shows it only has 24MB of Ram and I have installed 256. |
Re: Windows 98 reinstal help
try taking out the ram an put it back it may not have been seated correctly

Re: Windows 98 reinstal help
I could be (as suggested above) that your dad has moved the box to install the monitor and doing so has unseated the memory.
Open up the case and check that all of the cards inside (memory, graphics, etc) are seated correctly. Might be worth taking them out (one at a time) and putting them back in just to be safe. Check to see if your dad has installed any new software since you gave it back to him (including drivers for hardware). :welcome: to Cable Forum by the way :D |
Re: Windows 98 reinstal help
Could be that the Windows settings are wrong - the combination between resolution and refresh rate in Start... Control Panel... Display... Settings
