Help - screen goes blank when viewed through VCR

Before I phone CS, has anyone else come across this problem? Many things I've taped from the digital channels come out with a blank screen (but sound is OK). To get the picture back when the TV is tuned to the VCR channel and the VCR is tuned to the STB, I need to turn on the STB. The analogue channels are fine. It's not the tape as I've also been watching cable via the VCR channel and the screen has gone blank. I haven't noticed it happening if I leave the STB on, but I confess I'm not 100% sure about that.

Not quite sure what you have been trying to do.

If you want to watch anything, or record anything, being transmitted over the cable network, the STB has to be on, not in standby.

A freak of it's setup mey sometimes mean that some signals get past the STB when it is in standby mode, depending on the STB model, but it's haphazard and not to be relied on.

check the scart lead to VCR is seated in the socket firmly.

Thanks everyone. I didn't like to leave the STB on all the time (an old fashioned notion I'm sure!) but in future will do so when I'm taping. It would be far simpler if the VCR reception didn't work at all when the STB was off but it can receive for hours without cutting out. Odd.
