DVD RW drive gets locked
 

Spec:

• Philips DVD+-RW 8631
• WinXP Pro
• Nero 6.3.1.13

Over the past few weeks, my DVD drive seems to get locked, i.e. the tray wont come out when I press the eject button..also using the Eject option within context menu of the drive.

..even the faithful paperclip down the tiny hole fails.....but I then reboot and it open fine.

What could be causing it to lock up?..and any solutions?


...also, I actually have a CD drive aswell...and is unaffected by the DVD locking...so drive specific.

Update Nero to the latest (free) and if that does not help we'll take it from there....

Can you upgrade the firmware on the drive?

www.overclockers.co.uk are fairly priced.

Sounds like its knackered to me.

All that pron copying done it in me thinks ;)

Have you updated Nero and/or the drives firmware???

I`ve got the pioneer 108 with updated firmware and it does exactly the same to me. The drive underneath it is fine.
Been doing it for months to me. It happens as soon as I burn a disc and put it back in the drive to check it.
What i do now is, after burning a disc I put it in the other drive to check it. I`ve got a feeling it could be the brand of media I`m using cause it doesnt do it on certain brands.

I've downloaded both...Nero is a big patcher! :erm:

Looks like I already have the latest DVD firmware, I tried to overwrite the existing one, with a fresh...one but I just get a blank waiting screen instead :erm:

Nero, not yet tried...until I finish off the firmware update... :)

The reason I ask is because burning software often locks out a drive it is not handling the drive properly. This can be because either the drive is faulty, software is corrupt, the drive is not fully supported by the software or the firmware makes the drive/software handle certain media in an incorrect way.....

Software/firmware updates can help.

Swap the DVD/RW onto a different channel, e.g. master --> slave or vice versa, re-jumper it accordingly and then try to reflash new firmware on to it as it looks like the one you've tried has failed.

ok, I've removd Nero...and played about with the IDE channels...and the drive seems to be working normally now! :)

I'm going to reinstall Nero and try to burn something....

Well this seems to have worked a treat :tu: ...which part was crucial who knows!....but time's money!
