Surely the PC version is coming soon?

Damien 29-04-2005 23:56

Re: Apple release QT7 and HD video

Yeah it will be. Its coming soon. There may be some differences due to a lot of the features require some of the technology installed in tiger. While all the features will be in there, H 264 (The video codec which covers everything from 3G phones to HD Film) that is in QT7 is quite crap without 10.4.

In short, it will be on windows soon but 10.4 is ideal for it.

Spotlight, searches anything on your system instantly like itunes. Including system preferences. Type monitor into spotlight and click on the relevant icon to change its options. It searches within every file including text within pdfs. So, type in 'mum' every email, every photo, every video, every document with that term, contact details EVERYTHING. Will appear on your screen before you have finished the word. Smart folders works with that so you can set up a folder that instantly updates, so if you have a folder called 'cable forum' and you get an email from the forum it will INSTANTLY appear in the folder without you even reading the mail or doing ANYTHING. You can set the folders options as far as you want to limit to dates, names, words, file types, etc etc and so on. Same with spotlight search, so you can search for really relevant terms. So you can look for all your work, between a certain date that contains the term 'kill boss'

Look it up, its great

So Spotlight is like Indexing Service only for more file types?

Re: Apple release QT7 and HD video

Nah, its more than that. You can also search by metadata. I.E. you can find all pictures taken with a certain digital camera, between x and y dates. You need plugins for that though, and none are available yet, but hopefully will be soon when publishers catch on. You can also write out searches as predicates which is nice. The system caches all the indexes as you go so searches are pretty fast. I have to check out this Quicksilver later. It looks better, and its free...

I have to say that, Quicktime is the biggest pile of w**k ever created. Virtually all media players are better, and the Wmv codec is much better (even if it does have that really long seek time)

If you have iPhoto, you can do that with the dates. That information is already stored

So spotlight is like Google Desktop Search for Windows?

Damien 30-04-2005 12:49

Re: Apple release QT7 and HD video

No, First of all Google desktop only appeared a few months after Apple showed spotlight off. Second of all it has much better results (instant, as you type), and has better searching and more file types. GoogleDTS is a program, while spotlight is built into the OS and so is much better integrated. Look at the site and watch the video of it

Nah, Spotlight is just a program, too. The bit that's integrated into the OS is that the Tiger kernel will update the metadata index everytime it updates a file, this keeping it up to date. Unfortunately, if you're using a drive that get's written to by anything other than 10.4, then you've got to wait for the indexing cron job to come along and update it...

Incidentely, no-one has pointed out that this would be pretty easy for Microsoft to stick into Longhorn. After all, NTFS was designed around this idea of metadata -- it already keeps this separate from the files themselves, at the beginning of the drive for quick access. And NTFS was designed in what, 1993? Apple are lagging behind...

And anti-aliased text and a GPU accelerated interface which apple introduced 3 years ago is still to be release in longhorn.

And I have yet to find a PC security solution that is as easy to use and convenient as apple's encrypted disk images.

MS and apple are both innovators, they just excel in different areas (pun intended).
