Help? Pleeeze?

HiYa...have only connected to NTL broadband (1 megabyte) yesterday. Have an older pc, but has loads of memory, fast etc. and not too old. Using windows 98. have loaded the installation disk....do get into internet but very very slow! Also a lot of popups appear and am really STUPID when it comes to computers. Please advice me on how to speed things up! Thanks

:welcome: Helen. It sounds like you have a lot of spyware/adware on your system.

I suggest you download and install and run adaware. You can find it here:

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Then do the same with Spybot:

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

This should (hopefully) help with the popups, and may speed up you connection as well.

I think you have spyware too. Try the programs Dan has mentioned, but you also might want to try:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx

As I think its pretty good.

Re: Help? Pleeeze?

:welcome: If you are getting lots of pop-ups, it is possible your PC is infected with a virus or 'spyware'. Are you running any anti-virus software, or anti-spyware?

(I use AVG from http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php for anti-virus, and Spybot Search and Destroy from http://www.spybot.info/en/download/index.html for anti-spyware (both free to home users).

[Edit] beaten to it, I see.

Re: Help? Pleeeze?

Hi Helen,
You could also down load the 'Yahoo toolbar'(www.yahoo.co.uk & click on toolbar.)
That has a built in pop up blocker & anti-spy button & i've found them very good.
Do you have a good anti-virus program on the pc?
If not,do a google search for 'avg free edition' (made by Grisoft) & it's very popular.
