CM Lights

[potentially stupid mode]

I don't generally turn off my machine unless it's to reboot but since my email problem I've had to turn it off and on again a few times. I've noticed that the data late keeps flashing even when it's off. Is this normal and I've just missed it or shouldn't it be doing it (I've only had it since 2001 so can be forgiven for not knowing. :dozey: :erm: )

it is normal for the data light to flash even when the pc is turned off :)

It is the CM and the operating software on the CM saying Hello to the network and the network saying hello to the CM. Also people trying to access your CM (if you are say - being hacked).
Nothing to worry about, but the reason you have a firewall application or hardware firewall in place.

The noise being seen is a combination of unclosed connections, the usual spam that flows across the internet, scans from people trying to get at your PC (obviously not an issue if it's switched off) and broadcast traffic on local cable segment, nothing to worry about.

Huh? Poorly worded on my part, people trying to access what is behind your cable modem (hackers), the reason you have a firewall between the CM and the PC.
Are we not saying the same thing?

Cheers chaps. it's just something I've not noticed before mainly because it's rare the machine is off.
