Earthquake on same faultline as tsunami one... (Indonesia - 8.5)

An earthquake measuring 8.2 has hit Indonesia - 880 miles north west of the country's capital Jakarta.

about a week ago there was a very interesting article saying that a earthquake in the near future could happen because of the tectonic plates being unstable...looks like its happened..

I've heard there have been about 20-30 earth quakes of about 4-5 on the scale along the same fault line in the past 2 weeks :(

Makes you wonder what is triggering all these earthquakes and natural disasters off?? I will deffinately be thinking twice before I book a holiday there, I always wanted to go there, but I just could not take the risk, it is such a shame for those people, I bet they are living in fear.

Its a normal reaction to an earthquake. Earthquakes do have aftershocks and this should (and would) have been expected

But shouldnt these have happened straight away??? These appear to be going on for months and months, is there a dermographic shift or something we do not know about??

As far as i know aftershocks can go on for a long time although i am not completely sure.

When is an aftershock no longer an aftershock (i.e. at what point is it considered a new earthquake) ?

When it is caused by a different plate movement I guess.

Seems like this isn't the next big one they were anticipating. They were saying within 6 months of the last one, there would be an even bigger one, as the last time, only 1/3 of the fault line was affected. Looks like the big one (which will occur between Banda Aceh and Australia) is still to come.

Just look at Indonesia on the map !

The whole country is a set of islands created out of volcanic eruptions as the crust moved over the plates ....

With geology like that, I'm surprised there aren't more earthquakes ...... :erm:

well for all those who are spooked by yellowstone, there is a supervolcano geologically next door to this fault line, Toba i think it is called..this was the one that went off 74000 years ago...

there is also talk of the plate cusp on this fault collapsing... that would cause the mother of all tidal waves :erm:
