Unwanted calls

Recently I have been receiving kind of Automated-Recorded calls informing the fantastic things I've won (plasma tv, holiday, car...) providing I call ....number. What I would like to know... can NTL block these calls ? and secondly how can I stop anyone in my house answering these calls ? ( I know they are Premium numbers and cost a fortune to call ..and no prize at all...just a con )

hello, i'd advise you contact ntl and get anonomous call rejection on the line and also register with the telephone preference service, http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

TPS can't do much with them if they are based in the USA - well the one I got 2 days ago was, as was the one I got a few weeks ago. They use an 0800 number but then route the call back to America, where they then give you another (premium rate) number to call. Report the number to your local Trading Standards as well, and round here the Essex Police have a department set up for this sort of fraud too.
I Googled the number they gave me to ring back on and got all sorts of info like name of the company involved and individuals who run the company too - might be worth trying that too, the more info you can pass onto the authorities the better!

The biggest problem with these automated calls is that until the entire recording is finished, you can't use the phone irrespective of whether you hang up or not, best hope you don't need 999! I'm on TPS and I've blocked withheld number calls and I still get them :(

Is there anyway to drop the call on them? so that the phone can be used again?

Rest assured that when you put the phone down on these calls the line will be broken very quickly (seconds) and then you can make any outgoing calls you want (including 999/112) :) .

Cheers

The line wasnt broken on the call I had, when i hung up. It went on for about 10 minutes. I kept checking every couple of minutes.
