Former PM Callaghan dies, aged 92
 

Lord Jim Callaghan, Labour PM before Maggie's reign of terror, sorry, before Lady Thatcher became PM, has died on the eve of his 93rd birthday, 11 days after his wife passed away.

Interesting to see the cross party tributes, given the Winter of Discontent (very exciting for us candle lit youngsters). Michael Heseltine was fulsome and even Thatcher.

Yeah, respect tends to transcend politics which is nice. No matter how bad a job you think he did, being dead is always much worse.

I was pleasantly suprised at the nice tributes for Reagan. Given how liberal the US has become, and the UK, I was expecting a lot of hate over that (Cold War, Libya, etc), but I was pleasantly suprised at the left's comments.

Shame he's gone though - he really did seem to suit his nickname of 'Sunny Jim'. He seemed a geniuinely nice man.

Edward Heath, Conservative premier, ordered the three day week in December 1973, this ended in March 1974 when Harold Wilson became premier.

Callaghan's premiership 1976 - 79, to be remembered for his involvement in the now embarrassing Delorian deal and his appaling failure to call a general election when the omens were good in October 1978.
