Virus Checker Needed For Server - Suggestions Please
Hi Guys,
I need some anti-virus software for my new server (running Windows Server 2003). Just tried to install Avast but it won't let me as it won't install on any of the "Server" platforms..... Is anybody using any AV software on a server that they could recommend, preferably free? Thanks :D |
Re: Virus Checker Needed For Server - Suggestions Please

The Symantec site seems to try to keep selling me Norton products :Yikes: |
Re: Virus Checker Needed For Server - Suggestions Please
Symantec does not do any 'free' products.
I can not think of a legitimate free AV solution for server hardware, although I use norton coproate which works for me.. if you have many computers, and want to spend money your looking at £300 to keep up 2to 5 pc's and one server clear, the costs then go up from there. I cant rember if this is a home or office setup you are running. Maybee a search using some special software will yeild what you re3quire. |

I guess the other option is to share the entire drive to be scanned with the Laptop and then scan using the AV software on the Laptop. Didn't reall want to go down that route though. I'll have a cast about and see if I can find any special products that will meet my requirements. Thanks for the help. |

I use norman on all of my systems at work... not cheap though. i think we paid £2k for a 3 year license for 100 systems, including 5 servers... and exchange bolt on..... they do a free trial option....

Hmmm.....
This is just my home server I'm thinking about here. Just want to be able to make sure that there's nothing on it that shouldn't be.... TBH though I suppose that if I virus check every file I transfer across the network it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Thanks for the suggestion though KP. |
Re: Virus Checker Needed For Server - Suggestions Please
if its just a home server... and your looking for something free, why dont you drop avg on it.... :)

Re: Virus Checker Needed For Server - Suggestions Please
Hmm..... Didn't realise that AVG would work within Windows Server 2003, I know that Avast doesn't.
I'll take a look at AVG. Thanks for that. |
Re: Virus Checker Needed For Server - Suggestions Please
Which version of 2003 is it? Std. Ent. or Web?

Re: Virus Checker Needed For Server - Suggestions Please
Use Linux?
Viruses are no problem. You can still share using Samba, and most Distros support server applications such as Apache and qmail 'out of the box' Mr Wonka __________________ Failing that I'd go with AVG too. Seems like it's doing the Job on my laptop. |
Re: Virus Checker Needed For Server - Suggestions Please
AVG will not install under Server 2003, that's why I am currently evaluating ;) mcafee virusscan enterprise 8 and it does the job. Most free virus checkers are for home use and therefore will probably not install on the server versions of windows. Perhaps you shoud start evaluating mcafee ;)

Re: Virus Checker Needed For Server - Suggestions Please
not sure if it will work with a server but dont see why not kaspersky is one of the best ones out there at the moment apart from norton which i find to power hungry.,kaspersky also updates its virus deff every 15mins..u can change that if you wish though.

Go to Sophos and register for and the link for the trial, make sure your go for enterprise manager and this gives you 30 days before the user name you are issued expires. I keep doing this once a month and I have been doing it for several years now.

Re: Virus Checker Needed For Server - Suggestions Please
I have NAV 2003 on my server that loads as a service ie: you can have the server logged out and doing what it meant to do serve. The later versions of NAV will not load and all the free ones I have tried will not load as a service so if your not logged in they do not work. My update is due in June so I may also be looking for some virus software if Norton does not support 2003 version. But I think you can download the virus definitions manually and install them into the NAV folder
