NTL:Freedom won't maintain a connection

Hiya,

I've been having this problem for months now and I figured I should probably ask someone what's up :) Whenever I dial in, it's touch and go whether I'll get a full two-hour connection or not. I don't know if any T&Cs have changed but surely it shouldn't randomly cut-off anywhere from 1 minute to a half-hour :/

I say "random" because I could sit in a relatively idle state for about 10 minutes, then as soon as I try to load a page or send an instant message, it'll cut off. It's almost like there's a cap of about half a megabyte or something :) I don't really do a lot of downloading anymore and I rarely play online games (due to this problem mainly) but it's always nice if your mates want to see if you're up for a pint or something :)

I just wanted to know if this is a known issue or could it be something at my end? I've tried re-installing my drivers for the modem I have & re-installing that damn dialler software but to no avail.

My local ADSL exchange has just became active and now I finally have another full-time job I think I'll go for that when I sort out pricing etc, but it'd be nice to get this resolved in the meantime. I'm going to try also buying another extension cable but I don't really think it's that that's causing it.

Thanks to anyone who reads & offers advice. :)

I have not heard of this myself - have you spoken to tech support about it at all ?

I have not yet, mainly because the last time the dude wouldn't speak to anyone besides my mother. The DD comes out of her bank account & it's set up to her name, but I'm the primary user.

I work for T-Mobile and they have a password-holder policy, as in someone who knows the p/w can do pretty much anything besides close the account. I don't know if NTL have that nowadays but I don't really want to waste money finding out :)

And woohoo, it cut off twice during my typing of this message. :/

Doesn't matter a damn who the primary user is. The LAW states that ntl can only discuss the account with the account holder, and failure to comply with this law could result in the member of staff concerned going to prison.

From my memory of dial-up, disconnections are usually more to do with the BT line quality or the local modem than the ISP.

I would suggest signing up with a free PAYG to get a 'second opinion' - Tiscali do a suitable service.

If you still get problems with Tiscali, I would get BT to check the line quality.

Okay I'll do that, thank you. :)

This is not true. Data protection prevent any company disclosing information about the account holder. If someone was phoning up with regards to a fault or support it should not matter who they are as they are not asking for any account information.

But a lot of companies use this to not to speak to people at all and they should be more helpful.
