Dynamic DNS?

I have to be able to connect to home on NTL Broadband without the hassle of changing Ip address. So the questions are:

1. My Ip address is on a one week DHCP lease. Can I guarantee that if the STB is left on that the lease will renew without a change of IP address?
2. If not, would a dynamic DNS service help and if so how does it work? Mac address or some client software doing a constant transmission to the DDNS server?
3. Are the answers the same for Telewest and all flavours of ADSL?

Any help appreciated.:disturbd:

Basically using a dynaminc dns service, you run a little program on your computer, which feeds the main dynamic dns server occasionally with your current IP address... this is then associated to a domain name, so that your always able to access your home PC via a domain name. Some routers have these services built in too....

I use http://www.dyndns.org/ - works very well.

No. Probably 99% yes but you can't guarantee NTL won't change the address range on your local segment.

For NTL, the IP address rarely changes unless something provokes it, a reorganization at their end, or a change in MAC address at yours.

Quite a few ADSL's offer fixed address, but if they don't, it could be changing more often.

If you use a router, some routers directly support certain DYNDNS services, though you can also get router-aware clients that run on a PC.

The DDNS client software (especially if offerred by the DDNS service) should comply with their rules on reasonableness of updates - firing off frequent updates for an unchanged address is frowned on.
