Microsoft Patch problem

Following a problem with teatimer (S&D), now solved, I am having problems with KB891711 patch for W98.

I noticed the patch was listed in the 'Close Program' box, which seemed unusual for a patch, so unistalled and reinstalled just in case, still there, so unistalled, rebooted and now windows update won't let me reinstall the patch - it thinks I have it still, but it's no longer listed anywhere on the computer, including the add/remove programs which I used to unistall it previously.

Is there a limit on the number of times I can download the patch? Is there a way round this problem?

many thanks

Re: Microsoft Patch problem

There might be a record of it in the registry.

<Start>, <Run>, regedt32 (or might be regedit on 98)

Within the registry edit, do a find for 'hotfix' and you should see a list of patches installed. If there is one for KB891711 you could delete it. Be careful though - editing the registry is not to be done lightly!!!

How did you remove the patch and what makes you think that Windows Update still thinks it's on your pc?
That patch is part of this security bulletin
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS05-002.mspx
but as yet I haven't been able to find the Windows 98 specific download for it on the site :(
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/r...DisplayLang=en
So unless you can get Windows 98 to acknowledge that the hotfix isn't installed you may be buggered. Is there not an option on Windows Update to show components/ updates that are already installed? Can't remember back to the 98 version of WU :erm:

On the Windows update page there is "view installation history" under "other options".

Is that an option for Windows 98 users too? I know it's there for the new variants of Windows Update but I haven't run 98 in a while ;)

It worked on my old Lappy running Win 98 the last time I used it a few weeks ago.

Cool :) Knew it used to be there but wasn't sure how far back it went Windows wise lol.

Re: Microsoft Patch problem

Hi guys
I removed it through Control Panel - add/remove progs (unusual for patchs to show there) - though the problem with accidently denying change with 'teatimer' might have upset it (I've since made sure this is not denied now).
Wupdate installation history shows what you download, but not necessarily what's removed from pc. The option to download is no longer available so presumably there is a reference to it somewhere on the pc. Time to hunt thru the registry!

problem solved - found a m/s manual download site for patch, which does insist on being a running process, but at least I have the patch now.
