Cable Box stuck on "tune"

I keep losing channels - get the info bar but no picture/sound. I unplugged the box as this normally does the trick but yesterday and today when I tried this the box just stuck on tune for hours?

Any advice please.

if the stb is still on TUNE, you'll need to call faults if it's been like that since yesterday you'll probably need a tech out i'm afraid

try holding the down arrow button on the front of the box. saying that though, when mine got stuck like that, the box had moved onto the other side and had to be replaced.

so basically I'm screwed. No way am I taking a day off work and waiting for an engineer that will not show. Can't CS just send me a replacement box or do I just have to ring and cancel?

well, engineers are available from 8am to 8pm and also on saturdays so if you work *all* of these times then yeh, you won't be able to see an engineer.

How do you know the tech will not show you got a crystal ball......fair point if you need to work but ntl do alot of out of normal working hours appointments now. Sounds like you want to cut your nose of to spite your face about canceling, with most areas you will get a tech in less than 24 hours, if you can only do Sats though you may need to wait a couple of weeks as these get snapped up very fast.

Every time in the past when I have taken time off and waited in all day for an engineer they never showed up. When I phoned up Cs I was fobbed off with an excuse that they rang the bell but no reply which is utter BS. Whe n they have eventually shown up they have told me that they never had an initial appointment even so it is not there fault rather there managers. If I don't work then I dont get paid so why should I have to sacrifice a days wages? What is an engineer going to do other than swap the box over - something anyone with 2 hands can do them selves.

For the record I tried phoning CS at lunch time and this evening at about 8pm. Both times I gave up after being on hold for 10 minutes.

No, they can't just send one. They need to install it, so that if there's any problems with the installation, ntl can be liable and not you.

Also, ringing up and threatening to cancel is NOT going to make a CS rep put an stb in the post to you - for starters, most of them are nowhere near the warehouse that the stbs are stored in, and secondly, none of them have the ability to order one for you. You'll probably just be out through to disconnections...

Re: Cable Box stuck on "tune"

I'm told that the most common reason for a box to be stuck on tune is poor or degraded signal.

If you power up the box (using mains off/on - not using the standby button) your box should cycle through manufacturers name - eg PACE /TUNE / Nlt / BOOT (The actual display will probably depend which STB you have been issued with)......

If it goes: PACE / TUNE / Nlt (briefly) / TUNE - or similar - then that would indicate that the box is unable to collect the Network Information Table from the cable network..... indicating it either isn't there (no signal) or the signal isn't strong enough.

At this point - even though you may be expecting an engineer - it may be worth reaching behind the box to double check that the cable feed is securely connected to the machine - It uses a distinctive screw on F connector. If that's OK (and the F connector connection on the box itself hasn't become loose or wobbly - another possible cause of the problem) then you may want to check the other end of the cable - ie where is comes into the house and ensure that it hasn't parted company with the Cable company's wall junction as well. (If all still looks OK maybe there's a chance the cable has become snagged or damaged en route?)
Dunno - but certainly there's a few things there you can check out before the weekend!
Good luck!

I had this problem last night ..... Turn off the Box, wait 10 seconds, hold down the DOWN button when you plug the power back in, release after 5 seconds .... worked for me 4001N box on Langley :D

Mine went yesterday afternoon, all I've got on my box is TUNE, I phoned CS up and they have arranged a Tech visit for Wednesday morning.

What area are you in? I can bet you that you could get a technician out tomorrow morning/afternoon. It's perfectly understood that you do not want to take time off work, this is why there are 6pm - 8pm appointment slots available. There is also a process in place where the dispatcher actually calls you on your landline if the technician can't gain access. So for you to say that you were actually in is pretty hard to believe I'm afraid.

Also, it is not the technicians fault that they never turn up to an appointment that you made. They only work from what information they are given. It's not even his/her managers fault. The ownership is on the faults/cust services rep that you talked to.

So, what area are you in mate?

This is only a temporary workaround. You'll need to ring CS to get the problem fixed properly.
