Call from NTL - or was it?
 

Hi all,

My Gran got a phone call this evening from a chap claiming to be from NTL. He offered her a new TV package offer, but she replied that she wasn't interested as she doesn't watch much TV. She passed the phone to my mum, to see if it was something that would interest her (she watches the cable TV in my gran's house), and he then claimed she wouldn't qualify as it was only for working people, to which she replied, how did you know she was not working, and he claimed he figured from her voice. Did 1471, caller withheld their number.

Anyway the point of this post is to confirm that the call was 'dodgy' (ie since when do NTL call customers at their house at 7:45 pm, and since when were offers only available to working people?), and just to warn anyone else if they do receive a call. I'm told their was a lot of background noise which sounded like a call centre.

Finally, the number is ex-directory, but I suppose they could use a computer program to dial all numbers which are on an NTL exchange, and my mum phoned NTL after the call to report it, but the person didn't know anything about it, and said she would pass it up to someone else to look into it.

sounds dodgy to me. I've been with ntl for nearly 5 years and have never recieved a phone call from them. And since when did ntl care if you were working or not as long as they got their money ?

I`ve had several calls in the last 12 months quite lateish (usually when the footballs on telly) from ntl. The last time was about a month ago, asking me if I was happy with all the services and "did I need any more". When I pointed out, that I had the full hit from them and she should know that, I was told that, her company was sort of subcontracted out from ntl to do cold calling and she did not have access to my records. It was legit because I called ntl the next day and someone there told me that ntl did indeed sub this type of work out.

*227# blocks withheld numbers from your phoneline.

We had the samething today with some joker selling "ntl insurance". Reported it to both ntl and the police but thier probably not even in the UK.

Are you sure it wasn't "ntl Bill Protector" they were promoting. Sort of like Credit Card Repayment Protection, if something happens to your job or you take ill, your ntl bills will still be paid for a fixed period.

Does *227# work on BT for call blocking as I receive a lot of calls to my BT line which I use only for FAXing

And if it does, does it distinguish between withheld and unavailable numbers (i.e. mobiles via abroad which I get a few legitimate calls from)?

No. I call home from work (I work for Woolworths in their technical support dept) and it says "Anonymous call barring is in operation".
I call from my mobile (with 141 in front of the number) and I get the same schpeil (sp?).
NTL can get through it seems (fair enough - afterall, they run the service!)

*227# does not work on BT (you need to call BT to arrange this and it usually carries a cost of about £1 - maybe more) and only appears to work in SOME ntl areas (I think they are ex-nynex or ex-cwc areas mainly). There is a few different codes for other areas. (by the way #227# disables the call-barring :))

If we call people back from technical support we have to use a phone outside of our normal phone network to call customers back if they have anonymous call barring on.
