Accused of Spamming!!!!!!!!
Just received a letter from the acceptable use policy team saying they have traced bulk spam emails from my account...
They suggest I might be "infected" if I have no idea this is going on...for the record I have all the security patches installed...daily use my av and anti-trojan software! But...and as a show of good faith...I shall be downloading the software suggested in the curt letter...but and this is important...I have NEVER used my ntl email account...except maybe to contact them many months ago? Anyone shed light on this? As to why if my pc is clear - I'm accused of being a phantom spammer when I don't even use the account..? Can't I just delete it? |
Re: Accused of Spamming!!!!!!!!
I got accused once by BT for spaming, they sent me a letter so say they detected spaming activities and disconnected me. They where wrong of cause. I rang many many wonderful departments (not) to get it sorted and they sent me a letter to apologise and gave me 2 months free connection. It was quiet scary at first to thick I was a spamer.

Try contacting the acceptable use policy team.......they would be your first bet. Keep in mind though many of the newer viruses such as Beagle will drop Trojan Horse programs into your system which may nt get detected by any normal AV programs, and these Trojans can open up ports that enable spammers to direct email through your system. |
Re: Accused of Spamming!!!!!!!!
they are not suggesting that your ntlworld email account is being spammed, you can be a spammer without ever touching this
they are suggesting that there is something installed on the computer or a computer connected to your ip address that is sending out spam. Most likely someone has sent a spam message or a number of them to the AUP department, with the use of the headers they would have been able to trace your ip (where the email originated from) and have been able to trace the account to you. This is usually down to a trojan of some sort operating on the connection without you knowing about it but: - this could have been in the past (have you known about a virus infection on any of your computers recently) - it could possibly be a mistake but somehow someone or a number of people have reported an email coming from your ip address as spam once again this has absolutely nothing to do with your @ntlworld.com account if you say that you have fully checked the computer then i believe that the threat is no longer there but to be sure check check and double check as if there is something on the computer it is degrading your service software that you could use is: avg free - www.grisoft.com (antivirus) adaware - www.lavasoftusa.com (spyware removal) spybot s&d - http://www.download.com/3000-8022-10122137.html (spyware removal) all of which are free have you got information on the email that was forwarded to them? would also be worthwhile checking your ip address on : http://www.openrbl.org/ to see if you have been blacklisted anywhere if you would like any more information please let me know lets hope its just a mistake ;) |
