Trouble in the leeds area
Hiya everyone
I've had a look round the forums to see if I could spot anyone with a similar problem before I posted this - sorry if I'm posting in the wrong bit, or asking a question that has already been asked - but my parents have ntl broadband, and these last few days it just seems to have disappeared. This is by no means the first time it has happened, and usually it's just a case of waiting a few days for the connection to magically 'reappear', but since my parents have just gone away on holiday i'm not really sure what to do. Has anyone else had trouble with their ntl broadband connection these last couple of days? |
Re: Trouble in the leeds area
I'm in the Leeds area as well and have had LOTS of slowdowns and DNS problems over the last month or so. I've sent various emails to NTL support but have not heard anything back yet. I've only lost the connection completely once or twice, and in those cases switching the cablemodem off and waiting a few hours seems to have restored it.
Everything seemed fine up until a month or so ago - now DNS lookups seem to take ages, and often time out. E.g., click on a link to site, and after the browser says "looking up <wherever>" it will often just timeout with an error - but clicking the link again will then work. Presumably the DNS lookup gets cached somewhere? Also noticed sudden inexplicable drops in download speed - most noticeable when streaming audio from the BBC website. Used to work absolutely rock-solid reliably. Now I'm lucky to get a couple of minutes before the stream sputters and dies, waits a minute or so, then restarts. I hope all this is just temporary and NTL are in the process of fixing/upgrading things - otherwise I'll be switching providers fairly soon. David. |

Had some DNS probems on a couple of days last week, and lost connection a couple of times, but wasn't down for long

Re: Trouble in the leeds area
I'm in the leeds area too and have to say that connection seems a little slower than usual. As far as the DNS problems I have found that Firefox is having a lot more luck than IE is at the moment. Most pages viewed in Internet explorer over the last few days have been struggling to display images on any site i go to, as well as timing out a few times when first trying to access a site. FF on the other hand seems to take longer than it should to find some pages, but does manage to find them without the time out.

Re: Trouble in the leeds area
Obvious question, but when you lost your net connection did you try resetting the set top box. I lose my connection on average once a week and all it requires is to reboot the pc, then unplug the set top box for 30 seconds and plug it in again, and it's back.
If you've got a seperate modem I guess the procedure would be different but I've got no experience with these. |
