disconnected converter
 

Hi chaps,
I have ntl digital tv, and have been with ntl for a few years now. My friend recently switched to sky cancelled their anologue ntl tv and asked if I wanted their old anologue box, which I thought may be handy to watch terestrial channels on my tv upstairs. I used a cable splitter and ran a cable upstairs and all was ok for a few hours, channels 1 to 5 were fine, nothing else was there, but i only wanted 1 to 5 anyway, but then a message appeared "your converter is disconnected". Is there a way to connect it again?

You can probably tune 1-5 directly anyway.

Sounds like they got round to de-registering it - unless you know of any shady characters who can "fix" it - analogue boxes are supposedly a lot easier to hack than digital.

Nope, sorry.


The analogue cable box is actually still the property of ntl. Presumably it has now been denied access now that the account it was on has been cancelled.


However, it is possible (although against ntl's terms & conditions) to take the cable you've already split & run upstairs & plug that straight into the 2nd TV - giving you the 5 main channels, & possibly also Sky News & other "clear" channels.

But, if you do that, you must make sure that you are using decent quality coax - e.g. low loss digital satellite grade coax. You must also make sure that the connectors are fitted correctly. Poor quality cable & poorly fitted connectors can affect the quality of your service & also that of your neighbours. But, as I said above, it's against the T&Cs, so if you mess it up in any way, ntl will charge you..

Thanks very much for your help and advice chaps, very much appreciated. Re taking the cable i've split and receiving the 5 main channels, The digi box I rent doesn't seem to have an ariel option or I would have done that instead of the analogue box. (I can't get 1 to 5 on my downstairs tv except through cable channel)

I think Matt is saying you can connect the split cable you already have direct to the TV (at your own risk, of course). I.e. you don't need an RF bypass.

When you said that you had split the cable, I assumed that you had split the coax cable *before* it went to the set-top box? Doing it that way (main coax feed > F splitter > one cable to digibox & one cable to upstairs TV) would enable what I mentioned earlier. The 2nd cable would plug straight into the other TV, rather than into the (inactive & still belonging to ntl) analogue box.

Sorry Matt, I'm with you now, yes, I did split the cable that way, I'll try connecting the cable directly to the tv and fingers crossed get a picture. Many thanks for your help.
