I'm going to London on Friday and I want to know what exhibitions are on at the art galleries.Does anyone have a good site that will tell me? :)

Thank you for the links.Having had a look around online I frankly can't see anything I want to go and see.Shall suggest that eldest born picks seeing as how she is an inmate of that fair city. :)

What kind of art do you like ? And by 'art' do you just mean painting or decorative art in general?

The Victoria & Albert has a great range of galleries & usually has a good exhibition on - it's a museum but it does have a limited range of painting art - good stuff though, and you can pop round the corner to the natural history museum/science museum when you're done.

Or Tate Modern has some great stuff (as well as some crap) and the building it's housed in is a work of art of its own (a fantastic converted power station - there's usually an exhibition of something calming in the turbine hall) - and it's right across the river from St Pauls so you can 'do' the architecture stuff too.

Or Tate Britain has loads of great 'traditional' paintings and you can check out Parliament/Westminster Abbey a short walk away.

And there're one or two pictures by the odd Italian in a poky little place on Trafalgar Sq, and a few knick-knacks and the odd dead Egyptian in some building hidden away in Bloomsbury - nothing of any great interest of course, London's a bit short on art galleries- names of the places temporarily escape me ..... ;)

Go to the Tate, it was one of the best things i did in my (almost) 7 years i was down there.

Saying that - the Turner prize was on at the time and there was some really crazy stuff there.

I wanted to go to the Portrait Gallery off Trafalgar Square but she went there last weekend.Miff,miff.

The problem is that at the museums they are doing half term stuff and at the galleries half the exhibitions have either closed or are about to start.

I did consider the Whistler,Monet and Turner exhibition at the Tate.However having seen two major Monet exhibitions in the last 20 years and having paid regular visits to the Turner gallery as well I can't really see much point.I also hate trying to look at Monets in an overcrowded gallery because of the ignorant souls who walk between me and the paintings which have an optimum viewing distance of at least 20 feet. :rolleyes:Also she is not a Turner fan. :Yikes: :shocking: :shocking: :shocking:

I also am not that fond of Whistler....

I think I'm being dragged to the V&A but I'm not looking forward to that.It's so far from the nearest tube and my gimpy knee won't like it.A taxi is in order I reckon.

It's just the wrong season for culture.Perhaps I can take her shopping instead....a bit of retail therapy.... :D

Maybe i ought to also say: because the stuff that's on permanent display in the London galleries is so exceptional anyway, the exhibitions you get tend to concentrate less on the 'must get the casual punter through the door with some headline stuff' that you'll perhaps see at exhibitions at major regional galleris like the Walker.


Instead they'll probably illustrate a particular point/artist that the gallery feels is interesting - in other words, the gallery is the draw to get punters into the exhibition, rather than the other way round.

To be honest, it's the permanent displays at the London majors rather than exhibitions that'll have your jaw scraping along the floor :) If you only pick one, I'd say go for the V&A. And if you pick more than one, dont get the tube - get the bus between them and sit on the top deck at the front :)

Yes it is.It's an excellent museum but a bit difficult to get at easily.The last time I went I also took a chance to visit the Tea Museum which was much more interesting than it sounds.One or two very risque teapots there...... ;)

I've seen a lot of the major stuff but I wanted to see something interesting this week.

The best exhibitions I've seen at the V&A were the huuuuge modern ceramics one in the mid 70's(got to see some Lucy Rie) and the Costume jewellery of the 20th Century(about 5 years ago) and the Man Dress one two years ago. ;)

I reckon more men should wear dresses.Very sexy.Not drag queen stuff but dresses for men. ;)

Mind the most mind blowing was the Gold exhibition at the British Museum.What exquisite jewellery our ancestors made with very crude tools.The stuff we get from Samuels is trash in comparison.

I shall have to save some pennies for the summer and go then. :)
