DNS refresh frequency
NTL level 1 support doesn't seem to know (amongst other things) how frequently DNS servers are refreshed. I have registered a domain that appears in WHOIS but when I try to access it, it doesn't seem to exist. I assume (perhaps mistakenly) that this is because NTL's DNS servers have yet to be refreshed since it was added to WHOIS - is this true? If so, does anyone know when this is likely to happen?
Thanks. |
Re: DNS refresh frequency
Usually 24-48 hours (that's standard for DNS changes to propagate - not specific to NTL).
:welcome: to the site, by the way. |
Re: NTL level 1 support
hiya - welcome to Cable Forum
it can be up to 48 hours for new domains to propagate to NTL DNS. did your host not give you a temporary IP to use? <edit> oh well at least we agreed with each other :) Nice one John :tu: |
Re: DNS refresh frequency
DNS servers are not refreshed. Every domain has it's own refresh period. When first adding a new domain you rely on the parent domain refresh period - these are mostly set to 48 hrs.

...apparently no temporary IP - Thanks! I didn't think of that. I'll get in touch and see if they'll part with one.

- as a complete n00b to website hosting, i found it very re-assuring, it is interesting to see that other hosts may not be so helpful. As for 'parting with' the IP - it is what you are paying them for, it's yours, TELL them to give it to you :) - if I may presume, I think what Paul M means is that it is the various .com .co.uk .org .info etc 'parent' domains that are updated, this is then propagated out to all the various domain name servers run by ISP's. - |
Re: DNS refresh frequency
...'Part with one' was a figure of speech - just my sense of humour.
If DNSs receive new databases/tables/whatever - isn't that a kind of refreshing? I suppose it could be a "push" rather than "pull" solution, which might be better described by a different term than "refresh" - if anyone knows of decent technical documentation I'd be interested to know of it - RFCs? Thanks. |
