Port 22 Blocked?

Hi.

I have been unable to SSH into my server for about a week. :confused:

Can anyone tell me if NTL have blocked port 22

The support people for the server say that my NTL IP address isn't being blocked by any rules on the server and that it hasn't been 'hacked' or taken over by nasty people.

Or could NTL be blocking access to the server's IP address?

Thanks
Dave.

:welcome: smileydave!

I doubt NTL would be blocking any ports, except poss the SQL worm port (can't remomber the number).

Can you clarify whether the SSH client is on NTL BB or the SSH server? It sounds like the client (your PC) is connected to NTL.

Can you connect to the server on any other ports eg can you ping or telnet to port 80 or 443 (SSL)?

Have you upgraded to SP2 and enabled the windows firewall recently?

Re: Port 22 Blocked?

NTL do not block port 22. I use it all the time (including to connect to the CF server :))

OK, thanks for the replies.

I can ping other ports and the server is otherwise working fine - I just can't SSH

Dave :-)

Re: Port 22 Blocked?

Port 22 is used by SSH and pcAnywhere. If you have another remote access proggie on your computer such as WinSPc3 or secureCRT then make sure these are closed. Do a spyware check to make sure no one has installed a remote proggie onto your computer. you ahve probably done all this already.

Get a different SSH proggie like the ones mentioned above and re do your server settings. I get no problems using SSH from NTL either.

Re: Port 22 Blocked?

I run a SSH server on my server here which I can connect to both from Putty on my phone and Putty on a remote PC and I can connect to the game servers I run using Putty with no problems so I dont think theyre blocked.

Re: Port 22 Blocked?

Try using telnet to test port 22.

telnet your_ip_address 22

When I do this to my RedHat9 box I get;

SSH-1.99-OpenSSH_3.5p1

It won't go any further 'cos, obviously, it a telnet client, but it is a VERY useful method of testing whether ports are listening or not.

If port 22 is not listening you will get something along the lines of;

Could not open connection to the host, on port 22: Connect failed

Hope this helps.

Re: Port 22 Blocked?

Its a Secure Remote Control Protocol used mainly under Unix/Linux/Clones used to control the machine from a distance, its like Telnet only has encryption built in. A lot of web hosts allow Shell access for installation of scripts, etc. and its sometimes useful for controlling your site's MySQL database(s).

Re: Port 22 Blocked?

It also enhances telnet by replacing simple password access with a shared-key system, where you have to present a great long encryption key to login. This stops people trying to get in by simply trying lots of different passwords, since the key is too long and difficult to guess in a reasonable period of time. Additionally, unlike a simple password the key is never sent over the network so bad guys can't sniff it off the wire.

We use SSH all the time at ntl, so I'd be very surprised if it was blocked, half our techs have cable modems and use SSH for work or their own servers.
