DVDR Compatibility

Hi.

A simple question.
Can discs recorded on a Philips dvdr be played on a panasonic recorder, and vice versa.

Thanks in advance.

Sean.

Only way to be sure is to try it.

Re: DVDR Compatibility

Theoretically the answer should be yes, but I've found that discs recorded on my Sony DVD won't play on some other players that should play them.

As Bifta says, the only way to be sure is to try it.

Re: DVDR Compatibility

Let me rephrase the Question.

I think that the philips system use DVD+R and the panasonic system use
DVD-R. Does this mean that the two formats can not be read by each other.

Thanks Sean.

Re: DVDR Compatibility

all you need to do is check your panasonic player is able to read dvd+ disks - most likely it isnt though!

what model panasonic player is it?

not always a good idea - I tried a DVD +RW in my scan player a couple of years back and it wouldnt eject it. had to take the machine apart and then force the bugger out!

Have a look at this site here - you will be able to search on your recorders / players and it will tell you what they support and what they cannot play.

Very useful site that.

Re: DVDR Compatibility

I've had problems previously with DVD+R disks, even though the drive has said that it can support them.

Some interesting Info

Re: DVDR Compatibility

There are some people that can't play dvd's that I've recorded on my dvd recorder.

This isn't because it's + or - r - (as 'backup's' play ok) it is because the dvd is recorded in 'vr' mode. And not all dvd players can play this.

Also you will get better compatibility if you finalise your -r, -rw, and +r discs before trying to get them to play in another dvd recorder/player

You do not need to finalise a dvd +rw.

Thanks for all the advice.
I guess as you say i will have to give it a go.
It does seem mad that there is no simple answer to this question.
DVD is a new format, you would think that the manufactures could have got together and checked that all dvds worked on all systems.

Re: DVDR Compatibility

Correction.....DVD is lots of new formats. There was no single specification for recordable DVDs, so people went off and did their own thing. So you've got DVD-R & DVD+R for write once and DVD-RW and DVD+RW and then you've got VR mode and standard mode and then DVD-RAM, which is a whole different kettle of fish.

Most newer machines will support both the + and - formats but DVD-RAM is likely to die. As there's wide support for - and + both are likely to live for the time being - each have their own benefits and shortfalls. Ironically DVD-RAM is the better format on paper, but is totally incompatable with most things, often comes in silly caddies, and is more expensive too - hence the death knell sounding.
