TCPIP Setup for Laptop
Questions, questions, questions, when will they end. My latest one relates to setting up a laptop that is currently used on a network at work to work on BB at home.
The way I see it is that you cannot have 2 LAN icons and switch between them whether at home or work. But you must pick the LAN / TCPIP and if (as it is in this case ) the "use the following IP address" is used. Then you have to click the auto settings for use on BB at home and re-enter the IP address etc. for use when back at work. Is there an easier way like say Printers when you can have Icon for each and you just change the default. |
Re: TCPIP Setup for Laptop
On XP, there is the option to set an 'alternate' configuration. You can then set the 'normal' configuration to 'auto', and the alternate configuration to the 'work' settings. The laptop will then try to obtain its settings automatically (in technical terms - from a DHCP server). If it can't find a DHCP server, it will 'fall back' to the alternate settings.
This option will ONLY work if there is no DHCP server on the 'works' network, and will result in a slight delay in connecting at work (while the laptop tries to find a DHCP server and times out), but it does work quite well - I use it myself. |
