A link request from a company

Today I got a funny email

"I am contacting you about cross linking. I am interested in theriverkelvin.co.uk because it looks like it's relevant to a site for which I am seeking links.

The site belongs to a company that provides in whitewater rafting adventures. The site has a professional design with a very elegant look and feel. It also has a PageRank 5, which is expected to grow to at least 6.

I'll keep the web address confidential and will send it to you only if you give me permission to do so. Just let me know if it's OK, and I'll send you the web address for your review. If you approve of the site, then the intention is to exchange links.

Looking forward to your reply."

Its from hxxp://www.linkexpertise.com/

Now Im not that bothered about people linking to my little site...its pretty specialised. I have had a couple of people ask to reciprocate links in the past and I have asked a couple as well.
Is this just a scam? Chances are I wont take it up anyway.....but was wondering if anyone else had heard of this?

A question?

Is it possible to stop someone linking to your site?Is any decision that you don't want to be linked to, binding in law?

Incog. :)

Nope, but no doubt you can block referrers some how so you could prevent anyone coming from the site that's linked to you getting their via the hyperlink.

I get those as well and they read like spam.

Best practice is if it looks like spam, reads like spam, smells like spam then it is spam so ignore it, If it was genuine then it would include more information about the benefits to your self.

I'm not sure what control you have over your 'i-webhosted' type of account, Incog, but the Cpanel for normal hosting with i-web has a hotlink blocker :)

Incog has exactly the same control as any other client the only difference being the sub-domain name that was requested rather than a full TLD..

The link provided should tell you if it is spam or not hxxp://www.linkexpertise.com/

Actually I'm not wanting to do any such thing.I was just wondering what the legalities were in this area and how others might go about preventing it. ;)

After all the internet does suffer from misuse in general and I was wondering HOW anyone can defend themselves from dubious sites linking to them and how legally binding one can make it.

Why would a dubious site link to you?

Although I do get lots of refferers from bizzare websites !!
