Rogue diallers

Hi, I'm new to computing and I must confess not very tech aware. Apart from an ongoing battle with MSN, who since they upgraded their hotmail, seem intent on showing me error message 404 everytime!!!

What really scares me are these rogue diallers. I was searching for a dentist the other day, put in the words "dental connection" and came across a site that said click ENTER and you will be taken to porn images at £1.50 a minute!!!!

Now I have a stand alone cable modem. My phone is plugged straight into the wall using an NTL box and does not have any connection with my pc. My old BT phone socket from when I was with AOL (I'm with NTL now) is unused and my modem from my AOL days is unplugged.

Do I have anything to worry about or are there any further precautions I should be taking? Sorry if its a silly question, I read that sometimes you dont even have to click enter to get stung. I've checked network connections, all seems to be ok. It's more for future peace of mind really.

As long as your pc does not have a modem, or if it does, the modem is not conected to a phone line, then you have nothing to worry about as far as diallers are concerned.

Bear in mind I'm VERY tech unaware and new to all this. I have a "stand alone cable modem". My understanding of this is that it does not connect through a phone line but through a cable. This is the case is it? Thats why my phone is seperate from my pc? So I have no worries then?

A SACM (Stand Alone Cable Modem) is not the same as a phone modem that diallers use. You have no worries. :)
