Caller ID update ?

Hello,

Just had a look on the ntl web site and entered my postcode (TN23 Ashford,Kent). The details show Caller display IS available, as does the downloadable welcome/info pack for my area. Can anyone confirm if this is true :) or misleading info  ?

Regards

Martinhog

It says it's available in my area (Poole) as well. This is a good thing if it's true. Can anybody confirm?

(Also, why does it cost £1.75 a month on NTL, when it's £1 a month on Telewest?)

Because ntl & TW are 2 seperate companies, & what one charges has no bearing on what the other charges for a similar product.

I can work that one out for myself. But it is a general trend in most industries that companies will change similar rates for similar products -- for example NTL, Telewest and BT all offer their basic line rental package at around £10 a month.

So it seems odd that one company would charge 75% more for caller ID.

Ask a silly question......:dozey:

I know you know the difference between ntl & TW Tristan, but you did ask.....

Re: Caller ID update ?

As for the £1.75 charge - it was £1 originally, then went up to £1.50 and £1.75 quite soon after that. In other words they were charging a fair price once.

When is there going to be more competition in the phone market so more comapnies offer line rental/caler ID etc? Will companies like the Carphone Warehouse be renting out phone lines?

I wouldn't believe the post code checker on this one. It lists Caller ID as available in my area (S. Manchester) and it is definately NOT available in the North West.

Sadly BT also charge £ 1.75/month for caller ID (or £ 1.48 + VAT is how it's billed, possibly to look cheaper ?). What is needed is a definitive list from NTL as to what areas it is REALY available, IE where their own information is correct, and those areas where it is not.

It's the other way about. One company...Telewest...charges 75% less.

ntl simply followed BT by jacking it up to £1.75. BT went straight to that price point, ntl for some reason went to £1.50 first.

Very soon as it happens. Carphone Warehouse's excellent phone company, TalkTalk, are involved in trials of the new process that will allow the reseller to own the WHOLE bill, including line rental and features. BT would then be responsible only for maintenance, rather like the situation with Gas where British Gas (Transco) only maintains the network. British Gas from a consumer point of view is now a different company (Centrica) using the British Gas brand, and this is the way BT will go in due course.

sounds like good news.

Incidently people are saying BT offer the same value for money as NTL, but I do seem to remember that when you bought 4 or so phone line add ons with BT they were very good value, whereas this is not the case at NTL (this may have changed since)
