webspace and spam
Hello, I'm new to the forum.
I would like to start using my NTL webspace but I'm a bit concerned about spam. The default URL is obviously homepage.ntlworld.com/user_name, and the main email account is user_name@ntlworld.com. So if I start using the webspace, am I not letting spammers know what my main email address is? I hope I have phrased it so you can understand. If this has already been discussed, please refer me to where I can find the answer. |
Re: webspace and spam
hi hburdon :welcome: to Cable Forum
I have had two shots at using NTL webspace, on one account I had a 'mailto' link to my email addy for that account, on the other (my current one) I didn't - guess which addy got spammed ;) - I can honestly say that after two years with my current webspace address, I have received hardly any spam into the corresponding e-mail addy. That obviously only describes my experience and is not a guarantee. :) |

As Gaz said, I don't think you'd be too vulnerable to spam unless you actually had your email address as a mailto link on any of the webpages. Although, of course, you may also simply not want people in general to know your main username, especially if it is your actual real name. I believe ntl Tech Support can change the "name" for the webspace to something else, i.e. link it to a different & not so identifying ntl email address rather than one containing your name. |
Re: webspace and spam
Following up from Matt's message, it's possible to get spammed even if you haven't *ever* used the address by being victim to a "dictionary attack"
ie if your address is john.smith@ntlworld then the spammer just spams *.smith@ntlworld If you get the name put in as johnlsmith (or whatever your middle initial is) then it's much less vulnerable to this sort of thing. |
