bad breath ?

siemens germany is to market the first phone that detects the users breath odour and alerts them by a single tiny chip using a detection system.

Quote:

"It examines the air in the immediate vicinity for anything from bad breath and alcohol to atmospheric gas levels," the spokeswoman said. "Some people take smelling good rather seriously."

Not sure I would be wanting to use one of them, I already know my breath is bad after a few beers and a curry :D

Actually, the phone probably has more novelty value than real use, but I did read the Siemens are looking at using the technology elsewhere. Possibly in Cars. It would be good if they could design a reliable device that prevents cars starting if the driver is drunk. By reliable, I mean a device that doesn't just disable the engine if there is the slightest whiff of alcohol on any of the passengers.

Obviously, certain people would find a way around it, but I suspect such a device would cut drunk driving incidents down.

I find that if when you cough, the wallpaper starts peeling, birds fall out of the sky, people's eyebrows fall out, the wine goes off and the missus goes in to early menopause, then you've got bad breath.

Maybe the technology ought to be two-way. The phone detects bad breath and causes a 'bad breath code' to be transmitted to the person on the other end. Their phone then emits a bad smell.

Then wait for them to say "Corr mate! What have you been eating!?"

There is already a pilot scheme in place in one of the counties where they have a device like that in the car for people that have been caught drink driving - and it does seem to work (i.e. the device works) quite well. It also requests that the driver pulls over frequently to restest to make sure no one else has blown into it recently...

I'll try and find the link
