And that would achieve precisely what?

Firefox already has a google bar.

Utterly pointless...

I like the google 'brand', any browser that they had input on would probably be innovative, I'd give it a go :tu: :)

Isnt it more likely that they'll go for an IM client?? like Microsoft, yahoo and AOL have done...

I hope to god they use the Gecko engine (from Mozilla), they already have a close partnership.

Google tends to make things a lot better than they are now when they launch products...look at google news and gmail as examples, google news is very good as it takes articles from thousands of sources and is updated automatically, gmail is good in the way it shows conversations, and the fact it has so much storage.

So it would achieve a lot IMO a browser to take on mircosoft dare i say

Zeph - your post is summed up by its content  :)

Google's branding would be tremendously powerful. Those who think this is a pointless exercise have failed to understand that computers are not the preserve of geeks, they are consumer products. And where there are consumer products, there are consumer brands. Great though Mozilla is, it, and Firefox, do not yet have anything like the recognition of the Google brand. Google could bring out a completely ordinary, non-spectacular browser, but it would do well simply because everybody has heard of Google. A very interesting development.

This one post sums up my feelings about the alternative browser market totally.

It is also the reason I'm 100% supportive of Firefox, because I believe, after several enforced name changes, that Firefox now has a name and logo that COULD become very well known, as Netscape once was, because it's sharp, bright, catchy and user friendly.

They'll probably never get the same recognition Google has, but then I can remember when Google started out, AltaVista was king, and everyone said 'they will never gain the recognition that Alta Vista has'....look at them now, Googling is a verb!!

So yes, if they launch a browser, the public will lap it up, but don't rule out Firefox becoming well known either.....more and more 'ordinary' users are getting hold of it now, and that's what starts the spread, getting a foothold in the consumer market instead of just with the 'geeks'.

They do, Google hosts the Mozilla Developer days at it's HQ in California.

Yes, but that again is an event that occurs within the IT developer community. For Firefox to break into consumer territory it would have to have endorsement from Google that means something to consumers - a recommendation on the Google landing page for instance. Google, on the other hand, is already a recognised consumer brand with a ready-made platform for challenging IE.

For me, the dream ticket would of course be some kind of formal Google/Mozilla alliance, leading to Firefox becoming the official Google browser. At the moment, Firefox is the best current bet for a browser that can challenge IE. A Google browser would be better bet because of brand recognition - but Gooooooogle Firefox, well for me that'd be the mutt's nuts. :D

Roll on Googlefox (or should that be fireoogle):D

But Seriously, the Firefox rowser, with the google branding - that would be an absolutely brilliant combination..... :nworthy:

I have used Netscape, Opera, Mozilla, and now Firefox and can honestly say that this is the best of the buch - with google branding, the average user would try it, like it, and never look back.

I get my wife to move to netscape 7 from IE, and she loves it - now that firefox in on release 1.0 (or 0.10 as the linux code states :naughty: ) I will be getting her to try that. (I have used it since 0.5, but as a user, she needs the stability more than I) ;)

The only note of caution I feel should be added to this discussion is to bear in mind how Goooooogle makes its dosh - by cleverly working out which adverts to shove under your nose. I don't mind them doing that with their search engine, and I can tolerate it in Gmail in exchange for a whole gig of storage space, but in a browser? If they try to make it pay by appending adverts to every page I view, I would not use it.

I was wondering about that. We may well find that it's one browser that doesn't support any ad supression (unless you pay them a fee)
Then again, I already pay for adshield

very good point, but if you look at google news you do not have adverts on that so i would not see why the browser would be any different from that.
