Mail Server

Does anyone run there own mailserver on there connection

I have just setup mail enable and used a dynamic ip service to resolve which seems to work ok.

I have testing it sending an email from hotmail to the server and it works which is good.

First time i ever setup my own email server :)

Also how can i test to see if my server is an open relay which i dont want ;)

Does this effect my AUP?

Re: Mail Server

The main problem you will encounter running a mail server is that many ISP's have blocked email that originates from a dynamic IP address.

I thought about it and decided it was easier to pay iweb £10 for their basic service which includes PSP and SMTP mail (and webmail).

I believe ntl's a particular target for this, due in part to RFC-ignorant abuse procedures. I think some admins block all IPs other than its mail servers.

Also, AIUI, the trend is for major ISPs to stop people running their own mail servers - so it may prove only to be a temporary option.

many thanks for your responses.

I found that after installing a webmail solution to my server that its not an open relay, i had to edit my conf file so that authentication was required otherwise i couldn't send mail.
