Port Problems & Webpages
 

Guys,

Warwickshire, Nuneaton area seems to be having problems accessing some national and international webpages (which can be access through other connections) and also some ports, 21, 81 and a couple of others also not connecting.
Anyone know of any probs

the webpage problems may be due to a proxy server problem; have you tried specifying a different one?

Also what has lead you to believe that there are problems with some port numbers...??

Any packet loss?

What sort of problems are you having on port 21 and 81?

Firstly, Thanks for your prompt replies.

Actually I am not sure it is a port problem. I sometimes can access our companies FTP server on port 21, and sometimes not, but there is definately nothing wrong their end which is why I thought there would be problems.

Strange. Haven't tried a different proxy. Where best to get a list of good ones? Robin's page?

Set a proxy (IE)
Find a proxy (nearest to you is best, then work away. Try a few)

Use tracert to ensure there is no packet loss/routing problems.

Pathping (MS 2000 and above) to do big ping tests.

Robin walkers page is a good source of proxy list.

This will not affect ftp traffic though, so that seems to be a different issue.

Thats what I thought Monkey. I tried a couple of old proxies I had....now tried the new ones on Robin's page and none change the Web issues. But as you state the ftp issues seems to be seperate

Try both passive and active methods for FTP, that might help or a different client. I use FTP Surfer, and recommend it.

thx for the reply. This is not the issue. It doesn not even get to a dir listing, it simply halts at the connection stage which is a simple handshaking. PASV doesn't hamper that

Try another FTP server for comparative purposes.
Also try pinging the company server to check for packet loss. If pings are blocked, try a traceroute to see if there's any loss en-route.

Try looking a little closer to home, they are listed in the Knowledgebase. :D
