Toby Boxes

This is a completely stupid question but I was just wondering if anyone knew why in my area Toby boxes were not fitted and is it a problem if installers dont cap them when they do an installation surely water, general dirt and rubbish down in the ducts is a bad thing?

All other cabled areas round here had toby boxes with either "Nynex, CATV or Cable & Wireless" written on them.

I live in Wallasey (Liscard area).

In short, no! :D It depends on which company built the network, but there must have been a reason.

If the cap is not put back on or is missing, the next time that the tee is used invariably it will be blocked and will need clearing it can even lead to blockages in the main duct. And ntl will more than likely be issued a notice by the local authority highways inspector (for which they are charged) and given a set time to rectify it. If when the LA check again it is still not done, they will issue the notice again and charge again. It leads to Personal Injury Claims as well - trip or fall? not your fault? then sue!

There is a Tee round here on Seaview Road, Wallasey which is a new one just been put in as far as I am aware which stick about 2/3 inches above the pavement and this has not cap on it.

Im sure someone is thinking about taking a dive, LOL!

I think they just didnt use Toby's because they cudnt be bothered its not like they make any difference anyway other than stopping these problems.

Surely water in the main ducts will cause water ingress into the cables over time which will cause faults?

I think it this is unlikely unless the cable is damaged in some way. The outer layer of the cable is fairly sturdy and most drop cables have gunk in them designed to seal small cracks or tears. Also most of the water in the ducting will gather in the pits and sit there as a luxury rat bath.
