please help me

I'm stuck so again I turn to you guys.

I have a PC (win XP) and an Acer Laptop (XP) they were networked via a belkin wirelsss router, and all was working fine.

But, me being me, I didn't like the 10 gig of the harddrive I was losing due to Acers partition so I thought no problem I'll format and install XP Pro on it.

So I do that, installed the drivers from the Acer CD and everything shows as installed and working but I can't get my wireless connetion back.

My Desktop is connecting to the net fine (it's wired to the router), I have re set the router, re booted everything in order, but the only way I can can get my laptop on line is to hard wire it to the router.

I have tried reinstalling the wireless card driver etc etc.

The wireless card is listed as "LAN - Express" and can't seem to find an updated driver for it.

Also one odd thing is I can't access my routers internal page, the instructions said use 192.168.2.0 but this has never worked but it did if I changed the 1 to a 0 but now I get an auto search, any help????

May be of no help at all but my address is 192.168.1.1

If you connect the laptop straight to the router can it connect?

what ip is the lappy getting on the wireless connnection?

can you ping 192.168.2.0 from the laptop? how about from the desktop?

do you have any wireless security setup on the router?

Re: please help me

Yeah if I connect laptop via the Realtek nic it works fine with an IP of 192.168.2.13

If I try to ping 192.168.2.0 I get destination invalid form the dos prompt.

I have set up no security as far as I know, all I have done is install XP pro instead of the version of XP home that was on there.

I get the feeling the problem is with the drivers/wireless nic but seems odd that I can't get the router internal page on this machine that is connected to the net fine.

Re: please help me

does the wireless card in the laptop detect the connection? is it a pcmcia card (if so what brand) or built in?

IIRC the ip address for the router should be 192.168.2.1... but i am not sure. try this instead.

can you get on the router config page from anywhere or not? If so check on the desktop what the default gateway is will show you the routers ip. Try this in the browser. make sure you have no proxy server specified.

Re: please help me

ok have taken out the proxy and can now get router page on my desktop (my bad sorry).

Ok as for the wiress nic on the laptop, it is built in, it detects it and installs the driver (form the acer utils disk I have) shows it as working fine but it has the red corss through it, and wireless connection is not available, also the wireless light on the laptop is out, as if it's been disabled swomewhere other than device mang.

EDIT : the card is inbuilt and is listed as a LAN-Express IEEE 802.11 PCI adaptor

Re: please help me

hmm... interesting... don't suppose you have a wireless card in the pc that you could try as well do you?

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the driver for the wireless from the acer cd.

Re: please help me

I don't have a 2nd wireless card sorry. This is driving me mad :D

I can only think it's something software releated as it seems to be the card that's not going for it.

I have tried looking for an updated driver but with such a vague name I get like a million results relating to anything to do with wireless.

Re: please help me

what happens if you uninstall the driver and then don't use the acer driver to reinstall... does windows install it automatically?

can you post the exact model of your lappy and i will have a look for a driver

Re: please help me

If I remove the driver form the data base and try to reinstall it asks for a disk, nothing in windows data base for it.

It's an Acer Travelmate 250

Thanks for this mate.

Re: please help me

If it is a wireless a + g card, try the driver from here
It is version 2.3.1.10

If it is a wireless b card, try the driver from here
This one is version 2.1.0

imback 09-06-2004 01:12

Re: please help me

It's wireless b I think and it's the same driver I have on the disk :(

Ok either a) some kind of software is not running on XP that I need (since I installed this one myself) or b) by some massive coincidence at the same time I changed OS the card died.

Mmmmm I hate PC's :D

And I got shot of the acer partition so I wont be able to install their OS.

EDIT : Debs you aren't a hinderance at all, all help is very much accepted.

Re: please help me

I am not sure exactly how it works with your setup (don't use xp) but in the control panel -> network connections you should have the wireless connection there. On the properties it should be enabled. Is it then showing a network available and just refusing to connect, or showing no network available?

Re: please help me

It shows as enabled but unavailable.
