Upgrade delay?? - 150k-600k

Hi all,

I decided a couple of days ago that I can no longer cope with 150k and that I needed to upgrade to 600k. I tried upgrading online but after several attempts, I gave up after receiving several error messages. I called CS this morning to upgrade and after a couple of minutes, the lady said that it had all been done. However, this was over an hour ago and my speed still hasn't increased. I have rebooted the modem but that hasn't worked. Can anyone tell me if there is any delay when upgrading? I'd always assumed that it was pretty instant so if anyone can tell me otherwise I would be extremely grateful.

Also, can anyone tell me the best speed test to use?

Thanks

Have you also rebooted the PC?

Best speed test(s) IMO are....

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...speedtest.html

Also-what part of the country are you in?

Have a look at Robin Walkers site forinfo on how to check the cable modem configuration file http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...ps/cmfile.html

Thanks for the quick reply

I'm in Northampton.

My PC is connected to the cable modem through a Belkin wireless router and I have rebooted my PC.

The speed test results are as follows:

Mon, 7 Jun 2004 11:11:45 UTC
1st 128K took 7297 ms = 17962 Bytes/sec = approx 149 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 7281 ms = 18002 Bytes/sec = approx 150 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 8922 ms = 14691 Bytes/sec = approx 122 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 7906 ms = 16579 Bytes/sec = approx 138 kbits/sec

Try this:

Turn off the modem
Then Reboot the ROUTER
Turn the modem the back on
Reboot your comp

And see what that does

I had this before when upgrading, I was told at the time there was a delay.

Any upgrade/downgrade on the cable modem takes about 10 seconds, sounds unfortunately like it hasn't been done

what has rebooting a router or a pc got to do with changing the service level/tier?

In simple terms, when you phone for an upgrade NTL send a new file to the server which depicts the class of service for the Modem i.e. 150k/600k/1 meg etc.

By rebooting the Modem it usually forces the Modem to receive the new file hence then the new file has the service upgrade.

I am sure someone will soon pop along with a more technical answer.

:D

Re: Upgrade delay?? - 150k-600k

NTL have different IP address ranges for different broadband speeds/tiers. If equipment is connected via a router to the cable modem, then it is the router that needs rebooting, not the connected PC's. This is because the router has to drop the IP address it has been leased(from the IP address pool of the old speed), and obtain a new IP lease from the new address pool.

Rebooting the cable modem changes the config file, and through this changes what IP pool(and hence speed) your cable modem accesses when delivering an IP lease.

Is that right?

I downgraded a couple of months ago to 150k and my IP address has stayed the same.
