i have a avi file that i created with studio9 using a sony hi8 digi cam i have used this setup because i needed to record more than the tape can hold using the hard drive to store the avi the question is is there a way of removing the hiss so i can hear the voices that i have recorded. its important evidence that could be important in my case for justice is there any freeware aviable or commercial.

There is a program called Dexster that is supposed to be good, not free though.

Don't know the facts of the case but surely the police could help you out if it has \ will go that far ???

Have you checked whether the evidence that you are preparing is going to be admissable in the first instance? I`m obviously not suggesting that you would use such underhand methods, but it would be trivial to monkey around with the sound or use some other similar technique for altering the evidence.

I remember reading somewhere a few years back about how the police were developing special digital cameras that watermarked the images, if they didn`t it would be far too easy for someone to argue that the image had been tampered with.

Goldwave?

Make sure you keep the tape safe and in a manner it cannot be tampered with. Perhaps give it to your solicitor.

Make sure that you keep the original file safe and secure. If it is going to be admissible in evidence, it's the original recording that the court would need to be able to verify, and give copies of that original to the defendent / plantiff.

Take copies, and only work on copies when you try and enhance and extract stuff from your recording.

Adobe Premier 7 includes support for VST effects.
Some of these are freely available on www.kvr-vst.com - you need a "noise gate" by the way.

Re: avi file

If you split out the audio channel (try www.dvdrhelp.com for tips), then Exact Audio Copy has one of the best spectral subtraction noise filters there is, and it's postcardware!
www.exactaudiocopy.org

To use the filter, you need to be able to find a representative sample of NOISE ONLY, the same noise that you are trying to reduce - you only need a few 10ths of a second, but a larger sample is more accurate.

The result is BETTER, MUCH BETTER than any noise gate - in a test, I actually got audibility (I'd call it communications quality) of something that I'd deliberately swamped in PC fan noise
