evil home network....

my setup here is being annoying... wonder if anyone could help :)

Main PC: (Running XP Home)

this computer is connected to the internet (dial up) through a modem. the following are its network card settings:

IP address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server: 192.168.0.1
Workgroup: MSHOME
Name: Inspiron

Second PC (Connected by a ethernet crossover cable, running Windows 2000):

IP address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server: 192.168.0.1
Workgroup: MSHOME
Name: Desktop

Now, the problem starts when I try and network resources. The internet conenction sharing gateway works fine, I can have the internet online on both computers at the same time so this is no problem.

However, I can't seem to view either of the hard drives of one machine on the other. Both are set up by right clicking and going to the "sharing" properties, and full read and write access without a password is allowed. The only problem is, I can't see any of the resources at all. I get a window saying that the network pathway cannot be found, and also when i look in the network folder, the other machine isn't available.

So, does anyone know what is wrong? I think it might be something to do with the IP addresses etc but i am a complete :dunce:. All i want to do is view my files on a different machine... :(

Firewall?....If mine isn't set up correctly I cannot access files/drives between my machines. I have to set my firewall to trust my local network.

xp home needs extra files before it is fully up to speed on networking (at least that was the case with my old xp home version)
Try installing all files to do with networking for xp home off the cd....

Do you have passwords setup on the users accounts. When I set mine up we had no passwords set and I couldn't access the drives either. I set up passwords on the accounts and it worked like a treat.

no, no passwords are set up at the moment. the interesting thing is, i installed all the networking stuff from the xp cd as ramrod just said. now, all my drives from the main pc are available on the second pc, but i can't see anything from the second pc on the main pc. confusing....

try turning firewall off for both and then try it. If it works fine then its most likely something in your firewall thats preventing this.
Is the crossover cable new or damaged?
