Partition question

Hi all, silly question, I have a store bought system with one hard, if I where to patition it, save all the files etc that I wanted on the new " D " drive, and then use the master reset cd to start fresh, would it see the new partition as a seperate drive or wipe it clean  seeing it as part of the original " C " drive ??

Re: Partition question

If you partitioned your hard drive, then used the restore CD (unless it used fdisk, which is unlikely), it would load everything back onto Drive C, leaving D untouched. Formats don't wipe partitions, only fdisk does (and Partition Magic, etc)

HTH

Re: Partition question

Nowadays I always set up machines with four partitions. C = cache (or as little as possible bar the swap file); D = documents (all my work); E = executables (windows and programs); F = reference (copies of CDs including Windows).

Reinstalling Windows is a breeze. I can reformat each partition as required without touching the others and, since the Windows CD is on the hard drive, I don't need to mess about installing drivers before I can get it loaded.

I like that idea a lot, I think I'll have to borrow the idea. Thanks a lot :tu:

I thought that they just stuck the o\s on an invisible partition, did you have it partitioned useing partition magic, can't remember ??
So if I did partition then format C , your saying I could \ will lose the lot ?? I might invest in another h\d then, cheers m8y :) :tu:

Re: Partition question

The partion was not invisable it was e: as I recall.

Why not invest in a dvd burner? you can now get 8+ gig sony burners.

OK, as I said though, thinking of an extra h\d over a dvd burner, not sure I would get the use out of it  will have to think on it :)

Re: Partition question

I always use C: for installing programs etc on, because its generally what the program designers are aiming for & you never know if they have cocked up somewhere & make it incompatable to run on another drive.

That said, Games go on a seperate drive, as does downloads & all the other junk.

I have about 5 different partitions for different things over my disks.
Makes cleaning them up really easy too.
