e-mail tracking

Quote:

The days of pretending you just didn't get that e-mail you ignored could be over. Today, a company called DidTheyReadIt.com offers customers the chance to track every e-mail they send.

By signing up, you'll be able to see when an e-mail was opened, how long it was looked at, if it was read more than once, and if it was forwarded to anyone else.

Wish it gave more info on how it works, would really like to block it. It's bad enough with mobile phones when people get peed off if you don't answer the phone straight away. I like to reply to e-mail in my own good time.

And what could be the legal consequences ? could you be served papers in years to come with a " read receipt " as proof of papers being served

I'm interested in how it works as well. I think there may be some legal issues, as it will require the recipient's machine sending info to a remote machine without the recipient's consent. I don't see this standing up in court either.

But mostly, I don't like it for reasons stated above...

Just tried it and it uses the oldest trick in the book that some advertisers use to check that you are reading their spam that they send you. It uses a little 1x1 clear pixel that is embedded into the HTML of the email as an image with a unique reference code.

When the person opens up the email, the image is downloaded and as it is a tiny pixel nobody notices it. However if you are offline or if you have activated Outlook's image blocking then a big red cross will appear in your email and they will not be able to track it.

As the reference is unique the server will be able to detect it when it is read.

I thought it may be that, have my mail client set to never load images from the 'net. Probably will also add a rule to scan the headers for the didtheyreadit signatures and put them in a seperate folder (although I probably won't get any :)). It's not about having anything to hide, it's just to avoid the nags who say 'oh but you got the e-mail on such and such a date why didn't you reply'. It's just annoying.

What url is the image ? (so I can just block that domain).

This is the source of the email that I was sent...

PHP Code:

Test Test Test<br />
<
br />
123<br><img src="http://didtheyreadit.com/index.php/worker?code=65510935cc6100639dc3e22fb65e7d07" width="1" height="1" />

So I think didtheyreadit.com is the domain you need to block. However you will not be able to access their website if you do.

To be honest, if you have your e-mail client set to parse HTML then you deserve everything that is coming to them. I`m not sure if this service is going to track who has read e-mails, but it is certainly going to come up with a big list of idiots.

ive signed up for it and testing it right now because of the hotmail problems ive been having. Should be interesting to see what i get.
Tracker details dont seem to work when you add that extension in outlook, gonna have a look.

I've routed didtheyreadit.com to 127.0.0.1 in my hosts file.
That should do it. :)
