Whats best way to stop spam
Right at present I am using mailwasher to sort the mail before I get it in my mail programe. Well this is not actually stopping the spam. When you get about 100 mails a day its getting a joke. Now at NTL they tell me replying to the part of the mail saying about removing you is not a good thing to do. It makes it worse. So is this correct and what is a good way to at least get the spam to decrease a little so it does not seem to be getting worse. I hope someone as some sugestions. Many thanks in advance

Yep. If you reply to the spam to unsubscribe, often all you are doing is actually confirming to the spammers that your email address is valid, & you'll just get more. For more about spam, have a read through these threads: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=10877 http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=11818 http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=12514 edit: another - http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=10821 :) |

Watch the running order of your filters though. Place the specific filters higher up the list than the catch-all 'mail not to me' filter. I did this over a few weeks and the spam I get to see listed has dropped from over 100 to one or two per day. PS. Don't bother with bouncing because most spam-mail addresses are spoofs. All you achieve by bouncing is to add to traffic. |

I've tried numerous programs, and they all have little drawbacks of their own. I am currently using SpamPal from here and have found this to be the best yet. What you must remember is that you really need to spend time setting the software up correctly... adding plugins that are relevant, blacklists, whitelists etc. Time spent on that pays dividends twice over ;) Since installing it, I've had absolutely no legitimate mail tagged as spam (which is basically what the program does). Once I've run it for a while and continued happy, I will then set up a rule in Outlook that permanently deletes mail marked as spam by it (which is basically the same as requesting it being tagged by ntl). |
Re: Whats best way to stop spam
In my opinion the only way you are going to stop spam is by changing your email address, once these lowlifes have got your email address they'll never let you go!
As others have said clicking on the 'Remove Me' link only serves to confirm that the address is valid and increases your chance of getting yet more spam. I'm also of the opinion that using Mailwasher's 'Bounce' facility doesn't achieve anything, other than giving you the satisfaction of sending their rubbish back! |

Almost without exception a spam will have a fake/spoofed sender address which will make anything you send in return, a spam in itself. |
Re: Whats best way to stop spam
I ONLY use ONE email addy for online registering, buying etc. This is the one set up into MS Outlook In which I have installed Cloudmark's Spamnet. It sorts out what is spam for me(I seldom have any real emails sent to the spam folder and if I do I just unblock them)and all I do is from time to time is upload my spam box to Cloudmark so they can update their database and thereby update everyone elses database.
All I can say it is very efficient at spotting what is spam.It was very cheap to purchase and well worth the price. At least all the teensex stuff has stopped now.I'm now wondering just how much viagra is knocking about and who buys it.I don't think I'd rely on spam for a source under those circumstances. |
Re: Whats best way to stop spam
I have been usinf Spambutcher (www.spambutcher.com) for almost a year now. It is very efficaint at catching spam. You can download a free trial from the site so its worth a go.

Re: Whats best way to stop spam
I own my own domain. Say if I sign up for Gamestation's ordering part on the website, id make tdgs@mydomain.com. I do that for all things I sign up for, so should I find one of the addresses being a source of spam , they just get all redirected.
