Greetings -

does anyone happen to know of some free (or cheap) software that can be installed on PDA's and can detect Wifi hotspots as you walk/drive around? im aware there are websites that will list where the hotspost are but it dosnt list them all you see :)

on the same subject is anyone aware of some software you can get to test the security side of your Wifi network?

Thanks if anyone can help

It is technically called "War Driving"

imnot interested in war driving/chalking - for legit purposes id like to be able to walk around and say ohh that hotel has a wifi spot then log on see if its free or not and then carry on either entering cc details or using it for free - thanks for the link

I thought it was legit. I thought war driving was just driving round until you found a wi-fi hotspot? http://www.wardriving.com/about.php

I know that some war driving sites mention hacking a secured wi-fi hotspot, but some don't. That site http://www.wardriving.com seems to have a lot of resources on it too. I think it is only illegal if you break authentication/commit cyber crimes on it.

It's likely to cripple your battery life though.

There is a widgit that you can buy to do this.

Ever powered up your notebook only to realise that you do not have good WiFi access...and then dragged your notebook to another location 100m away with the same result!?

The WiFi detector, WFS-1, will relieve you from future frustrations. With the press of a button on the credit card size detector, you will instantly find out if you are likely to get good WiFi access!

Key benefits:

Ultra Sensitive

Convenience

Instant Detection

Doesn't the Pocket PC have a signal strength meter in it anyway?

Certainly my Axim does - but as pointed out, having the wifi on permanently really kills your battery...
